What is Jamstack? Why I Build Every Project With It
A practical explanation of Jamstack architecture from a developer who has built dozens of production sites with it. Learn why this approach delivers faster, more secure, and more scalable websites.
Every few years, web development gets a new buzzword. Most fade away. Jamstack stuck around because it describes something real: a better way to build websites.
I have been building Jamstack sites professionally for years. This is not a trend I jumped on. It is how I approach nearly every project because it consistently delivers better results for clients. Faster sites. Fewer security issues. Lower hosting costs. Happier development teams.
Let me explain what Jamstack actually means and why it might be the right approach for your next project.
The Name Explained
Jamstack started as “JAMstack” with the letters standing for JavaScript, APIs, and Markup. The idea was simple: instead of generating pages on a server for every request, you pre-build your site and serve it from a CDN.
Over time, the definition loosened. Today, Jamstack refers more to an architecture philosophy than a specific technology stack. The core principles remain:
- Pre-rendering: Generate as much as possible at build time
- Decoupling: Separate the frontend from the backend
- CDN delivery: Serve content from the edge, close to users
You can build a Jamstack site with React, Vue, Svelte, or plain HTML. You can use any backend you want (or no backend at all). The principles matter more than the specific tools.
How Traditional Websites Work
To understand why Jamstack matters, let’s look at how traditional websites work.
When someone visits a WordPress site, here is what happens:
- The browser sends a request to your server
- The server receives the request and wakes up PHP
- PHP queries the database for content
- PHP runs your theme templates
- The server assembles an HTML page
- The server sends the HTML back to the browser
- The browser renders the page
This happens for every single page view. Even if the content has not changed in months, the server does all that work again. And again. And again.
If your server is in Virginia and your visitor is in Tokyo, that request travels across the Pacific Ocean twice. Every time.
How Jamstack Changes Things
A Jamstack site works differently:
- At build time (when you deploy), the site generates all pages as static HTML files
- Those files get distributed to CDN nodes around the world
- When someone visits your site, they get the pre-built HTML from the nearest CDN node
- The browser renders the page
No server processing. No database queries. No round trips across oceans. The page is already built and waiting.
For dynamic features (forms, comments, search), you make API calls to specialized services. These run independently from your main site and scale automatically.
Why This Architecture Wins
Speed
The performance difference is dramatic. A typical WordPress site might have a Time to First Byte (TTFB) of 500ms to 2 seconds. A Jamstack site often delivers in under 50ms.
This matters for user experience. Studies consistently show that faster sites have lower bounce rates, higher engagement, and better conversion rates. Users do not wait around for slow pages.
It also matters for SEO. Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. Core Web Vitals directly impact search visibility. Jamstack sites typically ace these metrics without extra optimization work.
Security
Traditional CMS platforms are security nightmares. WordPress powers 40% of the web, making it an attractive target. Plugins have vulnerabilities. Admin panels get brute-forced. Database injections happen.
A Jamstack site has a much smaller attack surface. There is no server to hack. No database to inject. No admin panel to brute-force. The site is just files on a CDN.
When you do need dynamic functionality, you use purpose-built services with their own security teams. Your authentication runs through Auth0 or Clerk. Your payments go through Stripe. Your forms submit to Netlify or a serverless function. Each service handles its own security instead of you managing everything.
Scalability
Traditional sites need more servers to handle more traffic. You provision hardware, configure load balancers, worry about database connections, and watch your hosting bill climb.
Jamstack sites scale automatically. CDNs are built for massive traffic. Whether you get 100 visitors or 100,000, the experience is the same. You do not need to prepare for traffic spikes. The architecture handles it.
I have worked on sites that got featured on major news outlets. With a traditional architecture, you would need to frantically scale servers. With Jamstack, you might not even notice the traffic spike.
Developer Experience
Jamstack projects use modern development tools. Git-based workflows. Component-based frameworks. Local development that matches production. Instant preview deployments for every pull request.
Compare this to working with a traditional CMS where you need to match PHP versions, manage database migrations, and test on a staging server that may or may not match production.
Teams ship faster because the tools work better. Code reviews include live preview links. Rollbacks are instant. The deployment process is not scary.
Cost
Hosting a Jamstack site is remarkably cheap. Static files on a CDN cost almost nothing. Many marketing sites run comfortably on free tiers.
Compare this to traditional hosting where you pay for servers running 24/7 even when no one is visiting. Or managed WordPress hosts charging premium prices for basic reliability.
The cost difference becomes more pronounced at scale. Serving a million page views from a CDN costs pennies. Serving them from a traditional server costs real money.
When Jamstack Works Best
Jamstack excels for:
Marketing sites: Fast load times improve conversion rates. Static pages rank well in search. Content updates do not require server changes.
Documentation sites: Pre-built pages load instantly. Search can be handled client-side or with a specialized service. Version control for content is natural.
E-commerce product pages: Static generation with ISR keeps pages fast and fresh. Dynamic cart and checkout use APIs.
Blogs and content sites: The original use case. Content gets pre-built. Comments and search use external services.
Corporate sites: Low traffic does not waste server resources. Security is simplified. Updates go through a proper deployment process.
When Jamstack Gets Tricky
No architecture is perfect for everything. Jamstack has limitations:
Highly dynamic applications: If every page is personalized for every user, pre-rendering does not help much. Social networks, dashboards, and real-time applications need different approaches.
Very large sites: A site with millions of pages takes a long time to build. Solutions exist (incremental builds, on-demand generation) but add complexity.
Rapid content changes: If content changes every minute, the build/deploy cycle creates lag. Again, solutions exist but require more thought.
Teams without frontend expertise: Jamstack requires developers who can work with modern JavaScript frameworks. If your team only knows WordPress, there is a learning curve.
For most marketing sites and content-driven projects, these limitations do not apply. The sweet spot is sites with hundreds or thousands of pages that change periodically, not continuously.
The Modern Jamstack Stack
When I start a new project, here is my typical toolset:
Framework: Astro or Next.js
Astro is my default for content-driven sites. It generates zero JavaScript by default, resulting in incredibly fast pages. When you need interactivity, you add it selectively. Perfect for marketing sites and blogs.
Next.js is my choice when the project needs more dynamic features. Server components, API routes, and middleware provide flexibility without abandoning Jamstack principles.
Both frameworks have excellent developer experience, strong communities, and proven production track records.
CMS: Sanity
For content management, I typically recommend Sanity. It offers real-time collaboration, flexible content modeling, and a generous free tier. Marketing teams can update content without developer involvement while developers maintain control over the presentation.
Other excellent options include Contentful (enterprise-focused) and Strapi (self-hosted). The right choice depends on your team’s needs.
Deployment: Vercel or Netlify
For deployment, Vercel or Netlify handle the heavy lifting. Push code to GitHub, and they build and deploy automatically. Preview deployments for every pull request. Instant rollbacks if something goes wrong. Global CDN distribution included.
Both platforms have excellent free tiers for small projects and scale gracefully as needs grow.
Additional Services
The rest of the stack depends on project requirements:
- Forms: Netlify Forms, Formspree, or custom serverless functions
- Authentication: Auth0, Clerk, or Supabase Auth
- Search: Algolia, Typesense, or Pagefind (static search)
- Payments: Stripe
- Email: SendGrid, Resend, or Postmark
- Analytics: Umami, Plausible, or Fathom (privacy-focused options)
Each service does one thing well. You compose them into a complete solution.
Getting Started With Jamstack
If you want to try Jamstack, here is a simple path:
- Pick a framework: Astro for static sites, Next.js for more dynamic needs
- Start with local content: Markdown files are fine to begin
- Deploy to Netlify or Vercel: Both have free tiers and excellent docs
- Add a CMS later: Once you understand the flow, add Sanity or another headless CMS
You do not need to adopt everything at once. Start simple and add services as you need them.

Corporate marketing site migration (WordPress to Astro):
- Page load time: 3.2s to 0.4s
- Lighthouse performance score: 52 to 98
- Hosting cost: $200/month to $0 (Netlify free tier)

E-commerce product catalog (Next.js with Sanity):

These are not cherry-picked examples. This level of improvement is typical when moving from traditional architectures to Jamstack.
Common Misconceptions
“Jamstack is only for simple sites”
Jamstack powers complex applications at companies like Nike, Twitch, and Peloton. The architecture scales from personal blogs to enterprise platforms.
“Static sites cannot have dynamic features”
Jamstack sites are pre-rendered, not limited. Forms, authentication, comments, search, and e-commerce all work through APIs and client-side JavaScript.
“My content changes too frequently”
Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) and on-demand revalidation solve this. Pages can update within seconds of content changes while still benefiting from CDN caching.
“My team does not know JavaScript”
The learning curve exists but is often overstated. Frameworks like Astro support component-based development with minimal JavaScript. Teams familiar with HTML and CSS can be productive quickly.
Why I Build This Way
I have tried many approaches to web development over the years. Jamstack consistently delivers the best outcomes for the projects I work on.
Clients get faster sites that rank better and cost less to host. Marketing teams get content independence without sacrificing performance. Development teams get modern tools and confident deployments.
Not every project fits this mold. Highly dynamic applications need different architectures. Legacy systems have migration constraints. Team skills influence what is practical.
But for marketing sites, content platforms, and most web projects that need to be fast, secure, and maintainable? Jamstack is how I build.
